Anzac Day Inverell 1916

One hundred years ago the first Anzac Day services were held in Australia.

At Inverell a combined religious service was held at the Town Hall which was crowded with people for the occasion. The service began with the hymn 'O God our help in ages past' with the combined church choirs leading the singing.  After an address by Rev. Parton, Mrs. J. Davidson sang Ín Memorium'. a solo composed by Mrs. Frank Onus.

The 46th Psalm was read before an address by Rev. Johanson. The final hymn was 'O Gove of Love, O King of Peace'.  After the Benediction and a minute's silence for the fallen, the National Anthem was sung and the Last Post sounded.  The finale was Chopin's solemn "Funeral March'played by the Austral Band.

It is believed that the Kurrajongs who had been home on final leave were back in camp at Rutherford and that as members of the 33rd Battalion they took part in the Anzac Service held at Maitland.
