CORSIE, Samuel Murdoch

Samuel, the son of John and Isabella Corsie, was born at Peak Hill NSW and educated at Cobar. Prior to enlistment he was working as a Labourer at Moree NSW where on 10 January 1916 he signed up and agreed to serve from 14 January. He was a twenty five year old single man, living at Georges Hotel in Moree.

When the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs arrived at Moree, Samuel was one of eighteen men who joined these recruits on their way to the Narrabri and Armidale camps.  He became a member of the 33rd Battalion, C Company which sailed from Australia on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916. Upon arrival in England further training was undertaken at Salisbury Plain before the Battalion, as part of the 3rd Division, was sent to France in November.

Private Samuel Corsie was killed when hit by a shell on 22 August 1918 at Bray, France.  He was buried at Bray Vale British Cemetery, Bray-Sur-Somme, France.  His few personal effects were returned to his mother.  A brother Phillip enlisted in June 1915, served with the 17th Battalion and returned home in 1919.
