GOLDMAN, John William

John, the son of George and Mary Goldman was born in 1984 in the Inverell District. He was a twenty two year old Labourer when he enlisted at Inverell in December 1915.  John joined the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs who left Inverell on 12 January 1916 for the Narrabri and Armidale camps.  He became a member of the 33rd Battalion, D Company which trained at Armidale and Rutherford prior to sailing from Australia on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916.

After nine weeks at sea they arrived in England where further training was undertaken at Salisbury Plain with the 3rd Division which was sent to France in November.  John was wounded in action in October 1917 and invalided to hospital at Birmingham, England with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.  The following March he returned to France where just weeks later he suffered severe effects of mustard gas and was again sent to hospital in England.  Three months later he rejoined his unit in France where he remained until after the War.  His unit was returned to England in March 1919 to await transport back to Australia.

After the War John married Mary Marquardt and they had a family of five sons and two daughters. John worked for the Macintyre and Bannockburn Shire Councils until his retirement in 1964.  He was a keen fisherman and sadly drowned in the river in 1969 whilst pursuing this hobby.

Private John Goldman has his name recorded on the Nullamanna and Inverell Honor Roll.
