KNIGHT, John Thomas Stewart

John was a 22 year old Labourer who gave his address as Byron Street, Inverell when he enlisted at Inverell in December 1915.  His Mother Elena was living at Narrabri at this time. John, who was known as ‘Tom’, joined the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs when they left Inverell on 12 January 1916 for the Narrabri and Armidale Camps.

Unfortunately John was rejected as medically unfit at Armidale.  Determined to serve his country, he re-enlisted in April 1917 and became a member of the 12th Light Horse Regiment 21st Reinforcement. He sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A55 Kyarra in September and served there until July 1919.  He returned to Australia and was discharged in September 1919.

After the War he married Alma Harker in 1927 and lived at Narrabri until his death there in 1958.

Private John Knight’s name is recorded on the Inverell Honor Roll.
