MOORE, Hector

Hector, the eighteen year old son of George and Emily Moore of Gilgai enlisted at Inverell in January 1916. As he was under twenty one years of age, his parents gave consent for their son to serve overseas.  Hector was working as a Stationhand prior to joining with the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs who left Inverell together on 12 January 1916 for the Narrabri and Armidale Camps.

He became a member of the 33rd Battalion, A Company, which sailed for England on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916.  With his Battalion he arrived in England after nine weeks at sea, and further training was undertaken at Salisbury Plain before being sent to France in November.  Hector’s Service records indicate he may have been one of the very few men not injured or sick during the War.  He returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged two months later.

During 1922 Hector married Caroline Sullivan at Randwick NSW and they lived in Oliver Street, Inverell during the 1930s.  Together they had six children.  Hector died in 1970 in Hobart, Tasmania.

Private Moore’s name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll.
