SMITH, Linde Ross Edward

Linde was born in 1893 at Tamworth NSW, the son of Charles and Rose Smith. He was a twenty one year old Grazier at Woodstock, Inverell, when he enlisted in August 1914 joining the 1st Light Horse A Squadron.  On 20 October 1914, with several other Inverell volunteers,  he sailed from Australia for Egypt on board the HMAT A16 Star of Victoria.

Linde was wounded close to the Turkish lines at Quinn's Post, Gallipoli, evacuated to Egypt and died of wounds at the Greek Hospital, Alexandria on 18 June 1915. He was buried at Chatby War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. A memorial Kurrajong tree was planted for him in Inverell's Kurrajong Parade and his name is inscribed on the Inverell Cenotaph and the Inverell Honor Roll.

An article in the Inverell Times newspaper, Friday 25 June 1915, described him as follows:-

'... He was a splendid bushman, a capital seat on a horse, an excellent rifle shot and a fine, cool, level-headed gentleman. He was a large exhbitor in the local P and A Society's show ring and only at the last exhibition his horses were very successful. He was also a keen polo enthusiast ...'
