WIEGOLD, Arthur James John

Arthur was the son of John and Emily Wiegold of Delungra NSW.  His birth was registered at Parkes NSW in 1895.  Arthur was a keen sportsman playing cricket, football and tennis. He was also a member of the Myall Creek Rifle Club before he enlisted in December 1915.  With other district men he become one of the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs who left Inverell together in January 1916.

Arthur joined the 33rd Battalion which trained at Armidale and Rutherford before leaving Australia.  Unfortunately he was one of several men who became ill and did not sail with the main Battalion in May.  He was transferred to the Battalion’s 2nd Reinforcements and left Australia on HMAT A15 Port Sydney in September 1916.  After arriving in England further training was undertaken at Salisbury Plain until the Battalion was sent to France just before Christmas 1916.  Arthur was wounded in action at the Battle of Messines in June 1917 however, he rejoined his unit a few weeks later.  In October he was transferred to the 9th Machine Gun Company and four days later Killed in Action at Passchendale, Belgium.  He was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery.

Private Arthur Wiegold has his name inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph.  He was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade in 1919.  His name is also recorded on the Myall Creek Honor Roll and on the new Memorial gates at Delungra.
