DALEY, Goswell Ernest

Goswell was born at Moree in 1888 to Thomas and Laura Daley.  He attended Moree Public School.  He was a twenty eight year old Labourer at Moree when he enlisted at Warialda on 27 January 1916. The North Western Courier Newspaper at Narrabri NSW, 17 January 1916, listed him as one of the Moree men who joined the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs. It is possible he came forward at either the Warialda or Moree recruiting rally but did not pass his medical and take the oath at that time.

He joined the 33rd Battalion, 1st Reinforcement which trained at Armidale and Rutherford prior to sailing from Australia in May 1916. After nine weeks at sea the Battalion arrived in England where further training was undertaken.  He was sent to France in September with 9 Training Brigade, then joined the 53rd Battalion at Etaples.  During April 1917 Goswell was admitted to the Field Ambulance with defective vision.  He returned to his unit and was wounded in action on 27 September 1917 when hit in the stomach by a shell.  Sadly he died of his wounds the following day.  His personal effects, which were returned to his father, included his pipe, tobacco pouch, pens and a badge.

Private Daley’s name is recorded on the Warialda Honor Roll.
