LOW, Aubrey William

Aubrey was born in 1898 in Tasmania to Robert and Ellen Low.  When he enlisted in January 1916 he was an eighteen year old Labourer at Warialda NSW.  His older brother Arthur was already serving overseas with the 30th Battalion.  Aubrey was one of twelve Warialda district men who joined with Inverell’s First Contingent of The Kurrajongs on their journey to the Narrabri and Armidale Camps.

Aubrey became a member of the 33rd Battalion, A Company which sailed from Australia on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916.  Nine weeks later they arrived in England, where Aubrey was immediately admitted to hospital at Lark Hill.  A few weeks later he was transferred to 9 Training Battalion, then 10 Training Battalion.

After training in England his Battalion was sent to France in November.  Only three weeks later he was wounded in action and required evacuation by Ambulance Train to Havre for transfer to England where he was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital Edgbaston with a severe gunshot wound to his thigh. Aubrey was returned to Australia and medically discharged in November 1917.

He married in 1919 and lived the rest of his life at Warialda where he died in 1971.

Private Aubrey Low is remembered at Warialda where his name is inscribed on the Town’s Honor Roll beside that of his brother, Arthur, who was killed in action in France in 1916.
