BRYANT, Alfred Charles

Alfred was a nineteen year old Labourer at Delungra when he enlisted in January 1916.  As he was under age, his father, William Henry Bryant, gave permission for his son to serve overseas.  Alfred joined other district recruits forming the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs who left Inverell by train on 12 January 1916.

At the Armidale Camp he became a member of B Company of the 33rd Battalion which trained there and at Rutherford NSW before sailing from Australia in May 1916. After arriving in England further training was undertaken at Salisbury Plain, England before the Battalion moved to France in November.

Alfred was wounded in action in October 1917 and invalided back to England where he was admitted to hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to the thigh and arm.  He returned to Australia in July 1918 and following his arrival back at Delungra in December, attended a Welcome Home function at the Delungra School of Arts Hall.  He was not discharged until May 1921. His death at Marrackville NSW was registered in 1963.

Private Alfred Bryant’s name is inscribed on the Little Plain and Inverell Honor Roll and on the Memorial Gate Honour Roll in Anzac Park, Delungra.
