WALKER, Wyatt

Wyatt, the son of Alfred and Margaret Walker, was a twenty eight year old Labourer at Warialda when he enlisted there in January 1916.  With ten other Warialda men he joined the Second Contingent of the Kurrajongs from Inverell at Kelly’s Gully railway station on their way to camp at Narrabri. The men were then sent on to Armidale and Rutherford for training.

As a member of the 36th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement, Wyatt sailed from Australia on HMAT A68 Anchises in August 1916.  After arriving in England further training was undertaken until he was sent to France in November.  Three months later he was invalided back to England and admitted to Frenshall Military Hospital with appendicitis.  Following his recovery he was sent to Perham Downs Depot where he broke his leg.  Wyatt returned to France in July and was attached to the 9th Field Engineers for nine months, then transferred to the 35th Battalion.  He was wounded in action in May 1918 and invalided to England with a gunshot wound to his head and loss of his right eye.

Wyatt was invalided home to Australia in May 1919 and medically discharged in 1921.

Private Wyatt Walker’s name is recorded on the Warialda Honour Roll.
