WINKWORTH, Walter

Walter was one of nine children born to Thomas and Caroline Winkworth.  His birth was registered at Inverell in 1888.  He enlisted at Inverell in January 1916, stating that he was a twenty severn year old Labourer living at Elsmore NSW.  As his parents were deceased, he listed his brother Thomas as next of kin.

Walter joined other district men to become one of the Second Contingent of the Kurrajongs who left Inverell together on 29 February 1916.  He became a member of the 33rd Battalion, 4th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on HMAT A30 Border in October.  After arriving in England, he trained at Salisbury Plain before being sent to France in March 1917.  Four months later he was wounded in action and died of wounds at the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station.

Private Walter Winkworth was buried at Trois-Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.  His remaining personal effects which included letters, photos, pipe, pens and a religious book were returned to his brother.  Private Winkworth has his name recorded on the beautiful maple Honor Roll at Elsmore.  At Inverell his name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph.  In 1919 he was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade.
