JARRETT, Edmund Herbert

Edmund was the youngest of seven sons of Samuel and Emma Jarrett. He grew up at Dinton Vale, north of Inverell and went to the Airlie Brake School. As a single man, at the age of twenty five, he enlisted on 3 January 1916 and joined Inverell's First Contingent of the Kurrajongs.

From the Narrabri camp he was sent to Armidale where he became a Private with the 33rd Battalion. He sailed from Australia on board HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916. After further training at Salisbury Plain, England, the Battalion moved to France in November that year.

He was one of many wounded during the Battle of Messines in June 1917 and had to be sent to hospital in England for treatment for a gunshot wound to his right arm and back. After his return to France, he was gassed and evacuated back to hospital in England.

Following Edmund's return to France again, he was killed in action on 7 September 1918 at Road Wood. Private Edmund Herbert Jarrett was buried at Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Men-Monacu, France. His name is engraved on the Inverell Cenotaph and the Nullamanna Honor Roll.
