WRIGHT, Jonathan Raymond

Jonathan was born in Suffolk, England and came to Australia in 1888.  He was a Farmer at Lagoon Flat, Bonshaw, when he enlisted at Inverell in January 1916.  On his attestation form he stated he was forty four years of age and a married man.  He joined with other district volunteers to form the Second Contingent of The Kurrajongs and left Inverell on 29 February 1916 for camp at Narrabri.

After training at Armidale and Rutherford NSW, and as a member of the 36th Battalion, 1st Reinforcement, he sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A72 Beltana in May 1916.  Further training was completed at Salisbury Plain prior to his Battalion being sent to France in November.  The following year Jonathon became ill in Belgium, however his service records do not show he was gassed or wounded in action.

Private Wright returned home in 1918 and was medically discharged.  Upon his return to Bonshaw a Welcome Home evening was organised, during which an inscribed gold medal was presented to him and pinned on his coat by one of his daughters. Jonathan died at Goondiwindi Queensland in 1957.

Private Wright’s name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and the Bonshaw Honor Roll.
