CUTCHER, Herbert Lowell

Herbert was the youngest of three sons of Samuel and Bertha Cutcher.  His birth was registered at Wollongong NSW in 1895.  He attended Inverell Intermediate High School and then boarded at The Armidale School where he was a Sergeant with the cadet corps. When he enlisted at Inverell in January 1916, he had been a Farmer near Inglewood, Queensland.  Herbert joined other district volunteers who became known as the First Contingent of The Kurrajongs.  They left Inverell together on 12 January 1916 for camp at Narrabri and then moved on to Armidale.

As a member of the 33rd Battalion, D Company, Herbert left Australia on the ship HMAT A74 Marathon in May.  During the voyage to England he turned twenty one.  Just prior to arriving in England he was promoted to Lance Corporal. After further training in England he went to France with his Battalion in November 1916 and served as an armourer. He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged three months later.  In 1920 he married at Goulburn NSW. His elder brother, Courtney, enlisted in December 1917 in Sydney; however he was medically discharged two months later.

Lance Corporal Herbert Cutcher has his name inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll.
