MOORE, Claude Edwin

Claude was the second of nine children born to his parents, Charles and Matilda Moore.  He enlisted at Inverell on 6 January 1916, agreeing to serve from 1 February. He was one of a group of nineteen men who left Inverell for the Narrabri camp on that day.

Claude became a member of the 33rd Battalion, C Company and sailed from Australia on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916, arriving in England nine weeks later.  He trained at Salisbury Plain until sent to France in November.  The following year he was promoted to Lance Corporal.  In April 1918 Claude was gassed and invalided to hospital in England.  He was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatches in March 1919.  He returned home and was medically discharged in May 1919. In 1923 Claude married Emily Smith and they subsequently had five children.

During the Second World War Claude enlisted again, serving from 1941 to 1944.  He died in December 1964 and was buried at Ashford, NSW. His name is recorded on the Inverell Honor Roll.

Two brothers, John and Stanley also served during World War 1.
