NOBBS, George Rawdon French

George was one of several Inverell district teachers who served during WW1.  He was a nineteen year old school teacher at Elsmore Public School when he enlisted in Sydney in September 1914. He had been a member of the Inverell Light Horse for six months. His parents George and Emily Nobbs were living at Norfolk Island at this time.

George sailed from Australia in December 1914 with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, A Squadron. He served at Gallipoli until becoming ill in July 1915.  He was transferred to hospital in Malta until his return to Egypt six months later.  He was Killed in Action on 9 August 1916 at the Sinai Peninsula and buried at Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

His sister Evelyn enlisted in June 1915 and served in Egypt, India, England, France and Belgium.  She was awarded the Royal Red Cross Decoration 2nd Class in 1919 before returning to Australia in 1920.

Trooper George Nobbs has his name recorded on the Elsmore Honour Roll, and the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph. In 1919 he was one of the men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade, Inverell.
