COX, William George

William was the eldest of seven children born to Joseph and Maria Cox of Tingha NSW.  His birth was registered at Bundarra in 1895. William enlisted at Armidale in September 1915 when he was twenty years old, his father giving permission for him to serve overseas. 

After joining the 7th Light Horse Regiment, 12th Reinforcement, he left Australia for Egypt on SS Hawkes Bay in October 1915.  At the end of May 1916 he was sent to France and five months later transferred to the 54th Battalion. William was Killed in Action at Polygon Wood, Ypres, Belgium on 26 September 1917 and buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium. His identity disc and a razor were returned to his Mother.

At the Tingha Anglican Church a memorial service was held for Private William Cox.  His name is recorded on the Tingha Honor Roll.
