SMITH, David

David was born to William and Fanny Smith at High Halstow, Rochester, Kent in England about 1888.  At the age of twenty two he came to Australia and was working as a Motor Mechanic at Delungra, when he enlisted at Inverell in January 1917. He had previously been rejected due to a medical condition.

David joined the 14th Machine Gun Company 13th Reinforcement and left Australia on the ship HMAT A29 Suevic in June 1917. After arriving at Liverpool, England in August he went to Salisbury Plain where training continued until he was transferred to the 37th Battalion and sent to France in January 1918.

Private David Smith was killed in action on 19 July 1918 and buried at Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France.  His name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph. 

At Delungra his name is recorded on the Honor Roll and at the new gates in Anzac Park.
