ANDREWS, Henry

Henry was the son of William Henry and Catherine Andrews and lived at Stannifer near Inverell. He attended Stannifer Public School before becoming a Blacksmith.  Henry was a twenty eight year old single man when he enlisted in January 1915 and became a member of the 3rd Reinforcements of the 13th Battalion. His unit sailed from Sydney on HMAT A49 Seang Choon one month later.

Henry's life was cut short when he was Killed in Action at Gallipoli, Turkey on 29 May 1915. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli. His few remaining effects, which included postcards, razor, handkerchief, and a brush, were returned to his parents.

At Inverell the name of Private Henry Andrews is recorded on the Cenotaph and after the War he was one of those for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade. His name is also recorded on the Stannifer and Old Mill Honour Board, now located at Tingha.

Note: The Cenotaph shows the initials for Private Andrews as W.H. Andrews.
