CAMERON, Joseph William

Joseph enlisted at Narrabri NSW in August 1915 after coming forward at a large recruiting rally in Inverell when seventy six men volunteered. On his enlistment form he stated he was born at Armidale NSW, was twenty one years old and the son of Mrs. Annie Cameron. He gave his address as c/- of the Australian Hotel, Inverell. Before the War he was a member of the Myall Creek Rifle Club.

Joseph joined the 2nd Battalion, 14th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on the ship RMS Osterley in January 1916. He arrived in Egypt in March and the following month was sent to France. Joseph was wounded in action in July and sent to England where he was admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound. In March 1917 he was transferred to the 61st Battalion and following some illness returned to France in July 1918. After a few weeks he was wounded in action again on 25 August 1918 near Corbie and died of wounds three days later. Private Joseph Cameron was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France. 

At Inverell Private Cameron’s name is inscribed on the town’s Honor Roll. His name is also on the new memorial gates at Anzac Park, Delungra and the Myall Creek Honour Roll.
