HOYE, Arthur Edward

Arthur was the second son of Edward and Laura Hoye. His birth was registered at Hill End NSW in 1897.  The family moved to the Delungra district about 1907 when Arthur’s father obtained a Settlement Purchase block on Myall Creek Station.

At the age of twenty, and with his parents permission to serve overseas, Arthur enlisted at Inverell in August 1917.  He joined the 54^th Battalion, 10^th Reinforcement and left Australia on the ship HMAT A14 Euripides in October.  He arrived in England two months later and after further training was sent to France in April 1918.  During July he was wounded in action, rejoining his unit a fortnight later. 

Private Arthur Hoye was killed in action on 1 September 1918 and buried at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, France. His few personal effects which included a disc, wallet, testament and photos, were returned to his Mother.

Arthur has his name recorded on the Delungra Public School Honor Roll and on the new Memorial gates at Anzac Park Delungra. At Inverell his name is inscribed on the town’s Honor Roll and Cenotaph.  In 1919 he was one of the men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade, Inverell.
