SADLER, Ernest Roderick

The birth of Ernest to Charles and Jessie Sadler was registered in Sydney in 1889. He enlisted for War service at Warwick Farm, NSW in August 1915, stating that he was a twenty five year old Railway employee.

Ernest joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcement and left Australia on the ship HMAT A1 Hymettus in May 1916.  He was taken on strength at Tel-al-Kahir in June and transferred to 2nd S Squadron AMD.  He served in Egypt and Syria where he died of disease after being admitted to hospital suffering from malaria in October 1918.  Sapper Ernest Saddler was buried at Damascus British War Cemetery, Syria.  His personal effects were returned to his father and included a muffler, mittens, purse, pipe and clothes brush.

Ernest has his name inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph.  In 1919 he was one of the men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade. It is unlikely Ernest lived at Inverell, however his father was Postmaster here during the War years.
