JAMIESON, Arthur William

Arthur was the son of William and Catherine Jamieson of Nowra where his birth was registered in 1898.  A brother, Albert, had a property at Oakwood, north of Inverell, where Arthur worked before enlisting in Sydney in July 1918.

Arthur joined the New South Wales Reinforcement 17 and departed Australia on the ship HMAT A41 Bakara on 4 September 1918.  He became ill with pneumonia during the voyage and died of heart failure at sea on 24 October. Private Arthur Jamieson was buried at Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery, Sierra Leone, West Africa.  His personal possessions, including wrist watch, money belt and fountain pen were returned to his father.

Arthur’s name is recorded on the Oakwood and Inverell Honor Rolls and the Inverell Cenotaph. In 1919 he was one of the men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade.
