SULLINGS, Herbert and Clarence

Herbert and Clarence were the sons of Samuel and Catherine Sullings and lived at Tingha NSW. Their births were registered in Inverell; Herbert in 1887 and Clarence in 1890. By 1913 the family had moved to Hamilton NSW.

Herbert, a Locomotive Driver, enlisted at Liverpool NSW in April 1915. He joined the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance, 6th Reinforcement, was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment and sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A65 Clan Mcewan in May 1915. By August he had arrived at Gallipoli. The following year he was wounded at Romani and then returned to Australia ‘for change’. In March 1917 he returned to Egypt with the 6 Light Horse, 23rd reinforcements.

Trooper Herbert Angus Sullings was Killed in Action on 31 October 1917 at Beersheba and is buried at Beersheba War Cemetery, Palestine.

Clarence was a twenty five year old Ironworker when he enlisted at Liverpool NSW in July 1915. He joined the 8th Field Ambulance, Section A and left Australia for Egypt on HMAT A11 Ascanius in November. During August 1916 he was sent to France.

Private Clarence Alexander Sullings returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged two months later.
