CARTER, Arthur and Charles

Arthur and Charles were the sons of William and Rosa Carter of Delungra.  They enlisted together at Armidale NSW in October 1916 giving their address as The Glen, Delungra. Arthur, a Grazier, was thirty and Charles, a Blacksmith, twenty one years old.

The brothers were among thirty three volunteers farewelled at Inverell in October 1916 when they were presented with the Inverell Medal and a pair of knitted socks. Together they joined the 13th Battalion, 23rd Reinforcement and left Australia for England in November. After training in England they were sent to France.

Arthur was promoted to Lance Corporal in August 1917. Charles was appointed Lance Corporal in July 1917. A year later he received a gunshot wound to his shoulder and was invalided back to England for treatment.  He returned to France in October 1918 and was promoted to Sergeant in December. Charles was awarded the Military Medal ‘for bravery in the field’ (Commonwealth Gazette No 185, 27 November 1918). The two brothers returned home together in August 1919.

The names of Arthur and Charles Carter are recorded on the Delungra Honor Roll and at the new Anzac Memorial Gate in Delungra.
