GILHOLME, William Robert

William, the son of Albert and Sarah Gilholme, was born in the Inverell District. When he enlisted at Inverell in April 1916, he was a thirty two year old Farmer at Delungra and married with three children.

William joined the 7th Australian Light Horse as a Trooper until November 1916 when he was transferred to the 20th Battalion just prior to his departure from Australia on HMAT A29 Suevic. He arrived in England in January 1917 and was sent to France three months later. During 1918 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. In October 1918 was wounded in action and invalided back to England for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg.

William returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged in May 1920.  By 1930 he was living in Sydney where he died in 1983. His name is recorded on the Inverell, Delungra and Kooloona Honor Rolls and on the new Anzac Memorial at Delungra.
