CHEADLE, Cecil Alwyn

Cecil was born at Inverell, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Cheadle. He attended the Inverell District School and during 1911 was a member of the Senior Cadets. He was a keen cricketer and said to always score double figures when batting. At the time of his enlistment during July 1917 he had been managing a business at Barraba NSW.

As a Private with the 56th Battaltion 10th Reinforcements he sailed from Australia on HMAT A14 Euripides on 31 October 1917.  Whilst in a dugout at Sailly-Le-Sec, France, and writing to his mother, he was wounded by an exploding shell which landed nearby. He subsequently died of wounds on 21 July 1918 and was buried at St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France.

His brother Reginald served with the LIght Trench Mortar Battery Reinforcements 4 from 1916 and retuned to Australia in March 1919.

Private Cecil Alwyn Cheadle is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the Cenotaph and Honor Roll. A memorial tree was planted for him in Kurrajong Parade, Inverell.
