LAWRY, Walter Spencer

Walter was the second son of Mr and Mrs W. Lawry of St Kilda, Melbourne. He was a member of the Light Horse at Inverell before World War 1. He also belonged to the Delungra Farmers and Settlers Association.

At the age of thirty he joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment, A Squadron as a Captain in August 1914. He left Australia on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria in October 1914.

Walter served at Gallipoli where he was wounded in August 1915. Two months after returning to Egypt in December he was appointed Major and in November 1916 be became Commander of the 1st Light Horse Regiment. During July 1917 he returned to Australia for three months leave and his appointment was terminated.

Upon his return home Walter was given a Welcome reception at Inverell Council Chambers in October 1917. His younger brother James also served during the War.

Walter died in South Australia in 1955 and has his name recorded on The Inverell Club Honour Roll,  the Delungra Roll of Honor and on the new Memorial gate at Anzac Park, Delungra.
