BUDDSWORTH, Joseph William

Joseph was the third son of Frederick and Sarah Hamilton and was born at Inverell in 1883. He enlisted under the surname Buddsworth in Brisbane in October 1915, listing his sister Mrs. Galvin of Oakwood NSW as his next of kin. His real name was Hamilton.

After joining the 25th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement, Joseph left Australia on the ship HMAT Wandilla in January 1916. Arriving in Egypt, he was transferred to the 49th Battalion in April and two months later sent to France.

Private Joseph Buddsworth was killed in action at Pozieres on 3 September 1916. His remains, with identity disc, were discovered in 1931 near Monquet Farm and interred at Sere Road Cemetery No 2, France.

Joseph was one of Australia’s Indigenous volunteers who served during World War 1. His elder brother, Henry Hamilton, enlisted in 1916.
