BURT, William Harold Lindsay

William was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Burt of Delungra NSW. He was born in South Australia before his family came to live at Delungra about 1910. William was twenty years old when he enlisted at Inverell in 1916. He had served a one year apprenticeship in South Australia at Lewis’ Motor Works, Balaclava.   His parents gave their consent for him to serve overseas.

After a formal farewell at Inverell Town Hall where he and eight other volunteers were presented with the usual medal and socks, he became a member of the 33rd Battalion 5th Reinforcement and left Australia on the SS Port Napier in November 1916. Two months later he arrived in England where training took place until he was sent to France in April 1917. There he was transferred to the 2nd Anzac Corps School until November when he returned to the 33rd Battalion. Following an injury in May 1918 William was sent to England for treatment at 1st Southern General Hospital, going back to France in August. After returning to England in April 1919 he embarked ship for Australia in June.

William was one of eleven returned soldiers given a ‘Welcome Home’ at Delungra in August 1919. The following year he married and during the 1930s worked at Gragin Station. During World War II William served his country again. After this War he worked as a Mechanic at Delungra.

William died in 1967 and was buried at Delungra.
