LEWIS, Alfred Joseph

Alfred was the son of George and Isabella Lewis of Inverell. His birth was registered at Ballina NSW in 1893. He enlisted in Sydney in May 1917 when he was twenty three years old and gave his occupation as Railway Shunter. He had previously been rejected for war service. Alfred was given an official farewell at Inverell and presented with the usual medal and socks.

As a member of the 18th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement, he left Australia on HMAT A72 Beltana in June 1917 arriving in England two months later. After further training he was sent to France in January 1918. Following injury he was evacuated back to England and admitted to hospital in Birmingham for treatment. Whilst in England he married in September 1918 and did not return to Australia until August 1919. He was medically discharged three months later. Alfred died in Sydney in 1938.
