McMANUS, James Roland

James was a son of John and Ellen McManus of ‘Oak Park’ Texas, Queensland. At the age of twenty two he enlisted in January 1916 in Brisbane after attending a farewell function at Cross’ Yetman Hall the previous month.

James joined the 31st Battalion, 8th Reinforcement and left Australia on HMAT A42 Boorara in August. After arriving in England in October, further training was conducted until he was sent to France in December. Nine months later James was wounded in action and evacuated back to England where he was admitted to hospital in Liverpool for treatment of a gunshot wound to his right hand. He remained in England until the end of the War.

After his return home in June 1919 and discharge, he was given a ‘Welcome Home’ function at Texas. He died in Queensland in 1974.

Two brothers, John and William also served during the War; John in the same Battalion as James.

James McManus has his name inscribed on the Yetman Honor Roll.
