DOVER, Walter

Walter was the son of James and Eliza Dover of Molong NSW. He enlisted at Inverell on 6 January 1916, under the assumed name of Walter Casey. He stated on his Attestation Form that he was a twenty six year old Labourer, living at Moree and that his mother was Mrs. Eliza Casey of Molong NSW.  As one of Inverell’s First Contingent of The Kurrajongs, he entered camp at Narrabri and then trained at Armidale where he became a member of the 33rd Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement.

He sailed from Australia on the HMAT A69 Anchises on 24 August 1916.  In December he was promoted to Corporal and seven months later to Sergeant.  Walter fought in France where he was wounded in July 1917.  After two weeks recovery time he returned to his unit.

During 1919 Walter was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his ‘most efficient service as Company Quarter Master Sergeant and Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant’.  He was regarded as ‘tireless and enthusiastic, with a great interest in the welfare of his men.’

Prior to returning to Australia, Walter was given 12 months leave to go to America for agricultural study.  After the War, and following the death of his Mother, he admitted he enlisted under the wrong name and requested military authorities to correct his service record.

Walter's name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll as Walter Casey.
