HALLORAN, Frederick and George

Frederick and George were the sons of Patrick and Isabella Halloran who lived on the property ‘Bendingle’ Ashford NSW. Both were born in the Inverell District.

George enlisted in Brisbane in July 1915 when he was thirty years old. He joined the 31st Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement and left Australia for Egypt on HMAT A55 Kyarra in January 1916. After a few weeks in Egypt he was transferred to the 15th Battalion and then sent to France in June 1916. During April 1917 he was captured at Bapaume and became a prisoner of War in Germany. He sent a postcard home in July 1917 saying ‘Well; doing a little work’.

George was repatriated to England in December 1918 and returned to Australia three months later. He returned to the family farm where he lived for many years. George died in 1947.

Frederick enlisted at Armidale in March 1916 when he was thirty seven years old. He joined the 33rd Battalion, 4th Reinforcement and left Australia on HMAT A30 Borda in October 1916. After two months training in England he was sent to France in March 1917. He had several bouts of illness and was returned to Australia in 1918. Upon arrival he was given a ‘Welcome Home’ at Ashford. He returned to the family farm to live. Following his death in 1958, Frederick was buried at the Ashford Cemetery. His name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll.
