DIGHT, Herbert Wilton Cadell

Herbert, whose birth was registered at Warialda in 1878, was the second son of John and Mary Dight of Yetman. He had served three years with the 5th Australian Light Horse before enlisting at Narrabri NSW in July 1916. At this time he was a thirty nine year old Grazier, married and living at Bywanna, Boomi.

After arriving in England in January 1917 his Battalion had further training until sent to France in April as part of the 3rd Division commanded by General Monash. Just two months later he was wounded in action and treated for shell shock. He did not rejoin his unit until September. The following month Herbert was promoted to Corporal.

During June 1918 Herbert was wounded again and this time evacuated back to England where he was admitted to London War Hospital with a gunshot wound to his foot. Herbert returned to Australia in December, was medically discharged in June 1919 and went back to live at Boomi.
