REDMAN, Clarence Samuel Snow

Clarence was born at Inverell to Joshua and Elizabeth Redman. The family lived in Inverell during the 1890s. After leaving school he did a five year apprenticeship with a Blacksmith at Maclean NSW, then joined the NSW Police Force. He had been a member of the Maclean Scottish Rifles for three years before he enlisted at Liverpool NSW in June 1915.

He sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A8 Argylshire in September 1915 with the 4th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement. Clarence was transferred to the 56th Battalion in February 1916 and sent to France in June. Just two days after being promoted to Corporal in July he was wounded in action and transferred to England for treatment at Chatham Military Hospital. He returned to France in October. The following year he was promoted to Sergeant.

Clarence was Killed in Action on 26 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, Belgium. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.

At Yamba NSW, where his parents were living, a memorial service was held in his honor. He had been Captain of the Yamba Surf Club before the War. Clarence’s name is inscribed on the Yamba Honor Roll and the Maclean War Memorial.
