McLENNAN, Peter Duncan

Peter was born in 1886 at Newstead Station near Inverell and was a son of Alexander and Frances McLennan. The family moved to Queensland where Peter attended school at Mitchell and Longreach.

In May 1916 Peter enlisted at Hughenden, Queensland, stating he was thirty years old and working as a Drover. He joined the 42nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on HMAT A64 Demosthenes in December 1916. He spent two months in England before being sent to France in May 1917. Two months later he was wounded in the back and did not rejoin his unit until September. Just twenty days later he was Killed in Action in Belgium. Peter has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.

Peter’s personal possessions, including his wallet, letters and photos were returned to his wife whom he had married only a few months before leaving Australia.
