KING, Alfred

Alfred was a son of Horatio and Millie King of Glen Innes NSW. The family eventually acquired the property Needlewood at Bonshaw NSW where Alfred was living when he enlisted in 1916. His service record shows he was a thirty one year old Grazier and Motor Mechanic.

Alfred joined the 54th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on the transport HMAT A29 Suevic in November 1916. After arriving in England in January 1917 he became ill and did not go to France in November that year. In September 1918 he was wounded and invalided back to England. He returned to Australia the following year and was medically discharged.

Upon his return to Bonshaw he was one of several soldiers entertained at a Welcome Home function at the Bonshaw Hall in October 1919. Alfred married and remained at his property until moving to Sydney about 1948. He died there two years later.

Alfred has his name recorded on the Bonshaw Honor Roll.
