JENKIN, Herbert William

Herbert’s birth to Thomas and Elizabeth Jenkin was registered at Inverell in 1879. He served twelve months in South Africa during the Boer War and five years with the Mounted Rifles before enlisting for War Service in Sydney in August 1915.

Herbert, a thirty six year old Farmer, became a member of the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement which sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT SS Hawkes Bay in October 1915. During his time in Egypt he was ill with Malaria. Just before the end of the War he was appointed Lance Corporal.

Herbert returned to Australia in 1919. He married and spent the remainder of his life at Inverell where he died in 1927.

Herbert’s name is recorded on the Inverell Methodist Church Honor Roll which was unveiled by his Mother in 1916.
