KIRKPATRICK, Samuel

Samuel's birth in 1888 was registered at Liverpool NSW. His parents were James and Catherine Kirkpatrick. Samuel attended Hoxton Park Public School NSW. At the time of WW1 he had several relatives living in the Inverell District, including three sisters.

Samuel, a Salesman, is believed to have been living in the Inverell District before he enlisted at Armidale in October 1916. He joined the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Reinforcement which left Australia for England on HMAT A24 Benalla in November 1916.

After arriving in England where further training was undertaken, he was sent to France in April 1917, Samuel was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Zonnebeke, Belgium and has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. His personal effects of a watch, pipe and handkerchief were returned to his mother in 1918.

Samuel's name is among those inscribed on the Hoxton Park Public School Honor Roll.
