McKENZIE, Archibald White

Archibald, the son of Archibald and Martha McKenzie, was born at West Maitland NSW in 1883. He had been a teacher at Elsmore near Inverell prior to enlisting at Bathurst in February 1916. After joining the 45th Battalion, 4th Reinforcements he sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A18 Wiltshire in August 1916. Three months later his unit was sent to France.

During leave in the UK in September 1917 he became ill was admitted to hospital for treatment. Eventually the decision was made to return him to Australia ‘for change’. He was medically discharged in November 1918.

Archibald returned to teaching, working at Elsmore School until transferred to Drummoyne in 1920. He continued to live and work in Sydney where he died in 1968. His two brothers, Douglas and Jack also served during World War 1.

Archibald’s name is inscribed on the Loyal Elsmore MUIOOF Lodge Honor Roll.
