ANDREWS, William John

William was one of several children born to William and Catherine Andrews. The family lived at Stannifer near Inverell where both William and his father worked as Miners.

At the age of thirty two, William enlisted at Inverell in October 1916. He became a member of the 54th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement and departed Australia on HMAT A29 Suevic in November. Unfortunately, he became ill with pneumonia during the voyage and disembarked at Cape Town for admission to hospital. Three months later he sailed from Cape Town for Australia where he was medically discharged in October 1917 and granted a pension of sixty shillings ($6) per fortnight.

William died at Inverell in 1925 and was buried at Tingha. His name is recorded on the Stannifer and Old Mill Honour Roll.
