BRADFORD, George

George was the only son of George and Henrietta Bradford of Stannifer near Inverell NSW. He was a twenty-five-year-old Miner when he enlisted at Armidale in February 1916. At a farewell function at Stannifer residents presented him with a wrist watch. He joined the 33rd Battalion, D Company and departed Australia for England on HMAT A74 Marathon in May 1916. After further training in England, he was sent to France in September 1916. During April 1918 he was appointed Lance Corporal. The following year he was awarded a Military Medal ‘for conspicuous bravery’ near Hargicourt. (Commonwealth Gazette No 115, 10 October 1919)

After his return to Australia and discharge in July 1919, George returned to Stannifer where residents organised a ‘Welcome Home’ function for him.

George married in 1919 and died in Sydney in 1960. His name is recorded on the Stannifer and Old Mill Honour Roll.
