CRACKNELL, Walter Robert Charles

Walter was a twenty-one-year-old Labourer at Copeton NSW when he enlisted at Armidale in November 1916. He was a son of Alfred and Mary Cracknell.

Walter joined the 33rd Battalion, 7th Reinforcement and departed from Australia for England on HMAT A68 Anchises in January 1917. In April he was transferred to 62nd Battalion and sent to France four months later. In October 1917 he was killed in action in Belgium and has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. His personal effects were returned to his brother George.
