CROSS, Hugh Ross

Hugh’s birth was registered at Orange NSW in 1890. He was a son of William and Margaret Cross and was working as an Engine driver at Copeton near Inverell when he enlisted at Liverpool in October 1914. He joined the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement and a ‘send-off’ function was held for him at Copeton. His Battalion sailed for Egypt on HMAT A48 Seang Bee in February 1915.

Hugh served at Gallipoli where he was seriously wounded and treated in hospital at Alexandria before being sent to England. He was invalided back to Australia and medically discharged in September 1916. Upon his return to Copeton, he was given a public reception and presented with an inscribed gold medal. Later in his life he lived in Sydney where he died in 1974.

Hugh’s name is recorded on the Copeton Roll of Honor.
