KENNEWELL, George Francis

George was the son of George and Mary Kennewell who lived at Frazers Creek, Ashford NSW. He was a twenty-two-year-old Labourer when he enlisted in September 1915 at Armidale NSW. He joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A14 Euripides in November 1915. During 1917 he was wounded however he remained on duty. He returned to Australia and was medically discharged in August 1919. With several other soldiers he was given a ‘Welcome Home’ at Tingha in October 1919 and presented with a returned soldiers medal. (His mother had moved to Tingha in 1918 following the death of her husband.)

George’s name is recorded on the Howell Public School Roll of Honour and the Ashford Honor Roll.
