HUBBARD, Norman Henry

Norman was born at Hillgrove NSW in 1900. His parents were Jules and Mary Hubbard who later moved to Howell and then to Inverell. Norman was eighteen years old when, with his parent permission to serve overseas, he enlisted at Inverell in 1918. He had been working as a Junior Clerk for the Inverell Municipal Council and served four years with the Senior Cadets.

Norman joined the NSW Reinforcement 12 and was attached to C Company Technical Battalion at Liverpool. He sailed from Australia to England on HMAT A30 Borda in July 1918 and was sent to France in January 1919. During May that year he was transferred to the 18th Battalion before returning to Australia and discharged in September.

After the War Norman returned to Inverell and his position at Inverell Municipal Council until 1923 when he received a new appointment elsewhere. He was Secretary of the Inverell Soldiers Club in 1922-23. He eventually moved to Sydney where he died in 1973. His brother James, a former teacher at Howell, served with the 34th Battalion in France and returned to Australia in 1920.

Norman has his name recorded on the Howell Public School Roll of Honour.
