McCROHON, Edwin

Edwin was a son of Edward and Alice McCrohon. At the age of twenty-three, he enlisted at Toowoomba Qld in July 1915, stating he was born at Tingha NSW. His mother was recorded as his next of kin, her address Tingha. Edwin joined the 5th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A17 Mashrobra in October 1915. During January 1916 he was sent to hospital for treatment of bronchitis. He was found to have defective vision and returned to Australia where he was medically discharged in July 1916.

After arriving home Tingha residents organised a ‘Welcome Home’ function for Edwin and presented him with an inscribed medal. He was a popular and well-known local football player in the district. Edwin died in Sydney in 1963.

Edwin’s name is recorded on the Howell Public School Roll of Honour.
