McCROHON, Henry Louis

Henry’s parents, Louis and Elizabeth McCrohon, were living at Tingha just before World War 1. When Henry enlisted at Rockhampton Qld., in July 1916, he stated he was a thirty-five-year-old married man with four children, working as a Miner and living at Mt. Morgan.

He became a Sapper with the Tunnelling Companies, December 1916 Reinforcements and sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A38 Ulysses in October 1916. After a few weeks in England, he was sent to France where he was wounded in action in June 1917. He returned to England for treatment at Birmingham War Hospital and three months later went back to France. At the beginning of 1919 he became ill with influenza and died on 8 February. He was buried at Charleroi Communal Cemetery, Belgium. His personal effects, which included, letters, photos, pocket knife and diary were returned to his wife whom he had married at Inverell in 1905.

Henry’s name is recorded on the Howell Public School Roll of Honour.
